According to a recent survey, 1 in every 10 Indian children have no parents. This amounts to millions of children in
India who live without parents or guardians. Therefore, most of these children stay in poverty as they are unable to
fend for themselves with food, shelter, or clothing. As far as education is concerned for these children, the situation
is even worse. Very few of these children ever get to study properly in school. This will lead to lower job
opportunities in the future, and unfortunately, the cycle of poverty for these children continues for the rest of their
lives.
The reason for the presence of abandoned kids in India is multifold. Some of these children’s parents have unfortunately
passed away; some are left with single parents unable to provide for them; some are left with their grandparents who are
not able to take care of themselves; or some have left home from faraway places for some reason or another. Whatever the
reason, the children are the ones who face the long-term consequences of this crisis. They face consequences ranging
from lower physical and mental capabilities due to nutrition deficiencies to self-esteem and confidence issues.
The poor situation of the underprivileged kids in India is the reason for establishing our shelter home in India. Our shelter home in Mumbai is situated in Airoli and consists of children from diverse backgrounds. Our shelter has caretakers to look after the needs of the children, plus a dedicated cook to provide for the nutritional requirements of the children. As the children are of growing age , they require a proper nutritious and healthy diet that takes care of their overall growth. Lunch and dinner are provided on time, with fruits and other food items in between. Children are also provided with breakfast in the early morning before they go to school. To make the shelter feel like a true home, we also focus on the smaller details that shape a child’s daily life. Clean bedding, comfortable seating, and a warm, hygienic environment are maintained to support their health and well-being. Regular laundry routines and personal hygiene practices are also encouraged, helping the children feel fresh, confident, and cared for.
As the food requirements of the children at the shelter are taken care of, another important measure needs to be looked after. This measure is based on the clothing requirements of the children at the shelter. As these children have faced clothing issues in their lives, it is important to provide proper clothing for them. Proper clothing for daily needs as well as school uniforms is provided to the children all year around. This clothing ensures good self-esteem for the children and helps them lose the feeling that they are different from each other or lesser than them. Along with food and clothing, we also focus on giving the children a sense of belonging. Festivals, birthdays, and special occasions are celebrated together, helping the children feel included and loved. These small moments of joy add emotional warmth to their lives and create memories that every child deserves. Building this bond among the children and caregivers not only supports emotional healing but also encourages a family-like atmosphere where each child feels accepted, supported, and emotionally secure.
Another important requirement for the children is shelter. Our shelter home has a good infrastructure with sufficient rooms to make these children comfortable. This is important as these children have gone through one of the worst experiences in their lives, as they have not had a proper home since childhood. Therefore, a proper place to live provides them with a sense of safety and security. Our caretaker also ensures that these children are provided with extra tuition classes so that they recover the education that they unfortunately lost or could not take because of their years in poverty. This class helps them set up a solid foundation in their studies and helps them achieve their dreams in the long term. With safe shelter, nutritious meals, proper clothing, and educational support, our shelter provides a strong base for children who have endured deep hardships. Each child is given the care and attention they need to heal, grow, and move forward. Our aim is to offer more than just basic needs; we strive to give them a fresh start, a sense of belonging, and the confidence to dream big and build a brighter future.
It has been years since our shelter has opened doors for the children without any guardian support in their lives. Each day has been filled with new surprises. With the children, we as an NGO have learnt a lot. For all the children in the shelter, we are doing our best to provide decent clothing, nutritious food, and safe shelter to make sure these children have a fighting chance in their lives. To achieve their dreams, these children are working hard, learning from their school, carrying out extracurricular activities to develop their health, and also attending extra classes to prepare for the lost years of their education. Even after this, there are days when we feel we could do more. We need support for food supplies, tuition fees, changing clothing needs of children, and much more to give these children a constant stream of support. Join us in our journey to make these children independent and financially stable adults for the future. Your support will make sure we turn this dream into a reality.
